“7 Ideas to Gain Sales and Margin this Year”

How do you gain your best possible price in a time of penny pinching?  I scanned some of the recent research and academic articles for ideas:

  1. Offer coupons. Coupon use is on the rise again. In 2009, companies issued 367 billion coupons and shoppers redeemed 3.3 billion of them, a 27% increase, according to Inmar But who are these coupon clippers?  A poll of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers conducted last year by Harris Interactive found that coupon use is highest among well-off (household income above $100K), college educated city dwellers.  So consider offering coupons to your Facebook fans or local passer-bys via mobile offers.
  2. Swap time for money.  Wharton marketing professor Cassie Mogilner finds that time is a more “personally meaningful resource” than money. “It’s more reflective of who you are”.  Some customers may be more willing to prepare a dinner than treat to a restaurant, or assemble a piece of furniture rather than pay for the finished piece.  Are there ways you can scale down your product / services so customers can swap time for money?  This shift can appeal to the pocket book and the customer’s values.
  3. Organize around gift price levels.  Most shoppers have a pre-conceived budget for each gift.  Leading retailers like Etsy group products in the $25, $50 or $100 price groupings.  Bundle several lower cost items together to create the perception of value and to fit within these targets.
  4. Make gift purchases quick and easy.  Gift buyers tend to make quicker decisions and then move on.  Make sure you have streamlined checkout and delivery processes, online and offline.
  5. Create quantity purchase incentives.  Help your customers take care of even more people on their list with incentives to buy multiples.
  6. Offer personalized Gift certificates.  Gift certificates are the perfect answer for a buyer unsure of size, color, taste, etc.  Design the card or paper to be fast, customizable and attractive.
  7. Don’t forget about add on services.  Items such as shipping, gift wrapping and personalization can either be included in a bundle to hit that price category above, or offered at checkout as an up-sell opportunity.  One innovative idea is to bundle in a “basic” service such as simple gift-wrapping with an offer for more elaborate wrapping at $5-$10 extra.  These last minute add-ons can dramatically increase perceived value and overall profit margins.

What pricing tactics are you planning on using this holiday season?

Only 80,000 jobs added in Oct. but unemployment rate drops via USA Today

WASHINGTON – Employers added 80,000 jobs in October, slightly less than expected, as gains in professional and business services, leisure and hospitality and healthcare were partly offset by continuing job cuts at state and local governments, the Labor Department said Friday.

“The case for better payrolls in the not too distant future is building,” Ian Shepardson, chief U.S. economist at high frequency economics, said in a research note.

Most encouraging was a 102,000 upward revision to employment gains in August and September. The August estimate was revised to 104,000 from 57,000 and September’s was revised to 158,000 from 103,000.

In October, private employers added 104,000 jobs while budget-strapped governments cut 24,000. The total 80,000 additions were less than the 95,000 that economists expected.

Those totals are calculated from a survey of 400,000 businesses that typically doesn’t capture a representative share of small businesses and startup firms, says economist Conrad DeQuadros of RDQ Economics. That partly explains the sharp upward revisions in recent months, he says.

By contrast, a survey of 60,000 households that determines the national unemployment rate is considered more volatile on a month-to-month basis. But it samples a broader swath of the job market and is deemed reliable over several months.

For October, that survey showed a 277,000 increase in the number of Americans employed — which explains why the jobless rate edged down despite a 181,000 increase in the labor force. Employment gains in the household survey have averaged 355,000 the past three months, likely indicating that stronger job gains are ahead, DeQuadros says.

He estimates monthly payroll increases will average about 150,000 in 2012, up from 125,000 so far this year. Gains typically must average well over 150,000 to bring down unemployment significantly

“We’re moving in the right direction,” says Wells Fargo economist Mark Vitner. “We’re not moving as fast as people would like.”

Still, he says the report, along with recent better-than-expected data on economic growth and consumer spending, should further ease worries that the U.S. might be slipping into another recession.

There were several other positive signs in the survey. The number of temporary workers rose by 15,000 in October and has increased for several months. Hiring contingent workers typically preceeds the addition of permanent employees.

Also a broader measure of underemployment that includes part-time workers who prefer full-time work and discouraged Americans who stopped looking for jobs fell to 16.2% from 16.5%. And the number of unemployed people out of work at least six months dropped by 366,000.

The average workweek held steady at 34.3 hours while average hourly earnings increased to $23.19 from $23.14.

Professional and business services added 32,000 jobs last month and have added 562,000 the past year. Other gains included 22,000 in leisure and hospitality, 12,000 in healthcare, 18,000 in retail and 5,000 in manufacturing.

But construction firms cut 20,000 jobs, offsetting gains in September. And state governments cut 20,000 jobs.

National shopping event on Nov. 26 supports small retailers

National shopping event on Nov. 26 supports small retailers

“A small business initiative scheduled for the nation’s busiest shopping weekend aims to keep cash registers humming at mom-and-pops throughout the United States. The second annual Small Business Saturday is Nov. 26. sandwiched strategically between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the event uses discounts, promotions and the power of social media to encourage shopping at locally owned, independent retailers. Those retailers have suffered a decline in their national market share, which dropped by 11 percent between 1990 and 2009, according to an American Express OPEN study.

OPEN, which handles AmEx’s small business accounts, organized the first Small Business Saturday in 2010. This year, the initiative’s bustling Facebook page is building up to Nov. 26 with promotions for consumers and retailers alike. Merchants can download marketing materials, try for $100 in free Facebook ads and get tips on attracting
customers. Last year, more than 100,000 small businesses downloaded in-store signage, logos and other materials; 10,000 signed up for the free ads.

For consumers, American Express will offer a $25 statement credit for members who register their AmEx cards and spend at least that much at a qualifying small business on Nov. 26. Last year, 200,000 AmEx customers registered their cards for the $25 bonus. This year, FedEx will give away 30,000 American Express gift cards, each worth $25, on Facebook, plus an additional 10,000 to FedEx customers. Other corporate supporters include Clear Channel Radio, whose CEO pledged to promote Small Business Saturday on the company’s 850 stations, and Google, which is helping small retailers create “My Business Story” videos online.

For details, visit Small Business Saturday’s Facebook page or website.”
